Worcester Community Action Council Launches Pilot Program to Provide Universal Basic Income

26 families in Worcester will be receiving $100-$500 a month, no strings attached, for the next two years. The Pilot program from the WCAC (Worcester Community Action Council) is made possible by ARPA money. One of the questions we ask of WCAC Executive Director Marybeth Campbell is about the possibility of the program moving forward if the pilot is successful. She points to Cambridge investing twenty-two million dollars in their Universal Basic Income Program. Something she hopes Worcester will be able to do. Data will be collected by monthly surveys on how the supplemental funds are used and classes in financial management will be available but, again, their are no strings attached to the families chosen for the Pilot. They can use those funds however they wish. Campbell says in other communities the money most often goes to basic needs.

Rob Bilotta Clarifies HRC Goals & Work with Eric Batista
Rob Bilotta, member of the Worcester Human Rights Commission, calls into Talk of the Commonwealth to set the record straight on what the commission is working on and the vote at a recent meeting. Bilotta said the headlines and speculation about bad blood between the HRC and Worcester City Manager Eric Batista is overblown. The members of the HRC are working towards the goals the City Manager has, most notably when it comes to the Executive Office of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion, while also focusing on tasks the independent committee feel are important. , Bilotta said at a meeting this past Monday the chair had members rank what they feel are the most important tasks before them. Police oversight came out as the top goal but Bilotta, who stated his top goal is affordable housing, said that doesn’t mean that they will not be working on equity and diversity. He said the committee will break down into smaller work groups to concentrate on different issues at the same time.
