Boston, MA-Anne Brensley, Republican candidate for Lieutenant Governor of Massachusetts, joined Radio Worcester to explain the controversy surrounding her campaign’s missed filing deadline after securing the Republican Party endorsement at the state convention.
Brensley described her campaign as a grassroots effort built largely through volunteers and supporter engagement. She explained that after receiving the party endorsement, her campaign relied on an experienced party insider to help coordinate the signature collection process required to appear on the September primary ballot.
“This is a guy who’s really inside the party. He’s not some back-alley guy,” Brensley said. “And when I saw the numbers not come in, I started to realize something was up.”
Allegations of Fraud and Ethical Concerns
During the interview, Brensley detailed how concerns began to emerge regarding the legitimacy and handling of signatures gathered for her campaign.
She explained that after reviewing the situation, she made the decision not to submit signatures she believed could potentially be questionable, despite the political consequences that decision could carry.
Brensley characterized the issue as a betrayal of trust involving a longtime political insider and said the experience forced her campaign into an unexpected legal and procedural battle.
Legal Fight and Possible Write-In Campaign
After supporters reportedly recollected the required signatures, Brensley pursued legal action seeking relief from the missed administrative deadline, arguing that the extraordinary circumstances surrounding the campaign justified additional consideration.
The conversation also turned toward what comes next for the campaign, including the possibility of a write-in effort if access to the ballot is ultimately denied.
“Everything I’m hearing is keep going, we need you, please make change in the state,” Brensley said. “And for me, that becomes, okay, I’ll go do that. And if I lose, I lose. But if I win, it’ll be historic.”
How Massachusetts Primary Ballot Access Works
Candidates seeking placement on a Massachusetts statewide primary ballot must submit a required number of certified signatures by specific filing deadlines established by state election law. Missing a filing deadline can prevent candidates from appearing on the ballot unless courts or election officials grant relief under exceptional circumstances.
