Worcester, MA-Chris Naff, Chairman of the Asa Waters Mansion and Thomas Connell, Civil War re-enactor, 15th Massachusetts and Colonel in the Liberty Grays, give us the details of a reenactment this weekend in Millbury. “In recognition of America’s 250, Massachusetts 250, and our 200th anniversary here at the Mansion, we want to do something really special.” said Naff.
The Asa Waters Mansion is hosting a three-day living history event this weekend (Friday through Sunday) in Millbury to commemorate America’s 250th anniversary, Massachusetts’ 250th anniversary, and the mansion’s 200th anniversary. The event features approximately 100 military and civilian reenactors representing Union and Confederate forces, with encampments on the mansion grounds. “There’ll be a union camp on one side of the mansion and there’ll be a Confederate camp on the other side of the mansion” explains Connell. Programming includes mansion tours, battle reenactments at Stowe Farm, military dress parades, bayonet drills, artillery demonstrations, historic lectures, children’s programs, a load and fire competition, and a period church service. The battle reenactment is inspired by Harrison’s Landing and depicts a Union column encountering Confederate pickets and ambush tactics. “Reenactors do this because they really are historians. They consider themselves to be living historians.” said Connell.
Most events are free and open to the public, with ticketed options available for Friday’s open house and Saturday’s officer’s gala. Visitors can engage directly with reenactors who serve as living historians, gaining perspectives on Civil War history from multiple viewpoints.
