District 3 Worcester City Councilor George Russell has announced that he will not seek re-election. Speaking on Talk of the Commonwealth on the Radio Worcester Network, Russell stated that his early announcement allows ample time for others to enter the race. He shared that he is aware of several strong candidates who are likely to run and believes it is time for new voices to represent the district. Russell has served on the council for 14 years.

During the interview, Russell also addressed the recent controversy involving Councilor Thu Nguyen, who has alleged that the City Council chamber is transphobic. Russell stated that he has “never witnessed it” but emphasized that he has worked well with Nguyen and has supported them on issues like crisis pregnancy centers, despite being on the losing side of the vote. He acknowledged that he has seen instances where individuals used incorrect pronouns but promptly corrected themselves, as Mayor Petty did, without being singled out. Russell expressed respect for all his colleagues and a focus on fulfilling the work voters elected him to do. He clarified that his decision not to run again was made long before the current tensions in the council chamber.
