Worcester, MA- Comedian and actor Dustin Ybarra joined Hank on Talk of the Commonwealth ahead of his upcoming performance at the Brick Box Theater at the JMAC on Thursday the 10th. Known for his role as a stoner character on the hit show Ghosts, as well as appearances in We Bought a Zoo, Gotham, Us, and 21 and Over, Ybarra brings a self-deprecating, observational style to the stage rooted in real-life experiences, including his love of fast food, his four years of sobriety, and the absurdities of life on the road.
He called in from Montreal and told this story, “I went to the McDonald’s, but the inside was closed. So, I had to go through the drive-through as a person and I go to the window and I’m like, ‘Yeah, I’ll have some poutine.’ This guy’s like, ‘You need a car.’ And he wouldn’t give me any. Most people would have left at that point, but I ordered an Uber just to go through the drive-through.” On his sobriety he said, “I’ve been sober for four years now. Even though if you see me, I look like a guy who’s on every drug except for Ozempic… People will see me, they’re like, ‘Oh, you want to smoke a joint, man?’ I’m like, ‘I’m actually sober.’ They’re like, ‘But you look like a pothead.’ I’m like, ‘Yeah, I know. The cops who pull me over tell me that all the time, so thank you.'”
Ybarra talks about touring the country and filming in Montreal, his connection to Massachusetts and ability to pronounce Worcester through his fiancé’s family, and what audiences can expect from the Worcester show, which also features comedian and magician Mike Harrington. Hank asks what it’s like being in Canada at this time, “Dude, they hate us, bro. It’s so funny because I look so American too. First off, I’m fat, so they’re like, ‘Oh, he’s from America.’ Then I’m always going into… McDonald’s points don’t transfer to Canada. I found that out the hard way. So, I guess they’re really coming down on us, dude.”
