Thank you Dr. Michael Hirsh
Since the beginning of Covid Dr. Michael Hirsh has joined Talk of the Commonwealth on a weekly basis to ensure transparency and that accurate information is being given to the public. Now with Covid in the rear view mirror, Dr. Hirsh and other health officials will continue to appear on the Radio Worcester Network but not on a weekly basis. Hank and Dr. Hirsh talk about the last few years and where we are headed now that we have moved from the pandemic to the endemic.
A New Fungus Among Us?
There’s a fungus among us but Dr. Michael Hirsh says no need to freak out. It is true that Candida auris is spreading and this particular version of it seems to be attacking people with comorbidities. This is not the start of “The Last of Us.” Let’s not scare ourselves. What can happen in the wake of the pandemic is the news can latch onto a story and that can make it seem more of a threat then perhaps it actually is.
How has this mild winter affected Covid, the flu and the common cold? We asked Dr. Michael Hirsh.
How has this mild winter affected Covid, the flu and the common cold? We asked Dr. Michael Hirsh who said things are looking up. That we are seeing the numbers go down in the testing of the waste water. We are on the course to the endemic phase. Worcester is launching a campaign on heart health – swimming and CPR will be big parts of the campaign. The goal would be that when something like what happened to Damar Hamlin is seen people will know how to react.
Dr. Michael Hirsh gave us a health update for Worcester & Central Mass this morning, including how we’re doing with COVID in the early going of 2023.

Hirsh- Vaccinations for 6 mth to 4 yrs will be available Tuesday in MA
Dr. Michael Hirsh told Talk of the Commonwealth he feels the vaccinations for 6 month to 4 year olds, which will be available Tuesday in MA, will be an important part of the fight against Covid going forward. As Covid becomes more seasonal, like the flu, he feels this will begin to grow immunity and stave off serious illness. Dr. Hirsh is realistic that vaccination for those so young may take some time to be embraced by the public. Worcester has been stuck at 63% total vaccination rate for the past 3 months.
Dr. Michael Hirsh on COVID, Guns, and Preventable Death
Worcester’s Dr. Michael Hirsh has long been an advocate to reduce gun violence. He is the founder of Goods for Guns, a successful gun buyback program in the city and across the state.Speaking on the “Talk of the Commonwealth” morning show Dr. Hirsh made the case that gun violence, now the #1 cause of death in children, is a health crisis and should be treated as such.
