Boston, MA-Mike Walsh, the Republican nominee for Massachusetts Attorney General, joined the Talk of the Commonwealth to tell us about his goals and why he is running.

Walsh stated that if elected Attorney General, his first act would be to sign a one-page letter empowering the state auditor to legally enforce the voter-approved audit of the legislature. He told us he is actively involved in lawsuits challenging the MBTA Communities Act, arguing on the principles of home rule for towns and against the state imposing unfunded mandates on local taxpayers.

Walsh pledged to use the Attorney General’s office to challenge fees on utility bills, which he argued the current AG had allowed to “creep onto your bill.” He also criticized Andrea Campbell for focusing on suing the president instead of prioritizing what he saw as the core duties of the office, such as prosecuting internet crime and supporting local police.

Walsh repeatedly criticized what he saw as an “imperial” governorship and an activist Attorney General’s office, arguing for a return to legislated law over executive orders and regulations. “I’m very much opposed to an imperial presidency or an imperial governorship. I mean, that was the reason we threw off the British to begin with.”

Walsh hopes to see a lot of support come election day, “If you’re mad as hell, go out and vote this November.”

What Is the Legislative Audit Dispute?

Massachusetts voters approved a ballot measure allowing the State Auditor to audit the Legislature.
However, legislative leaders have challenged whether the audit can be enforced, raising separation-of-powers concerns.

The issue centers on:

  • Whether the Auditor has authority over the Legislature
  • Transparency vs. independence of a co-equal branch
  • Potential court rulings to clarify enforcement power

The debate has become a key political issue, with candidates like Mike Walsh pledging to support enforcement of the audit.
