New Worcester DPW Commissioner John Westerling Focuses on Storm Response, Staffing & City Parks
Worcester has a new commissioner of Public Works and Parks, John Westerling. Westerling is the former DPW commissioner of Natick, and he says he is a public servant at his core and couldn’t pass up the opportunity to serve a larger community. He officially began the day after the snow/rain storm that left the city encrusted in ice. He says the public deserves excellence in the services a city provides. He must ensure that Worcester has the staffing, training, and equipment to deal with large storms. The storm of a couple of weeks ago was a challenge across the Commonwealth, and he feels that one way to be better prepared is to continue attracting people to work in Worcester. He lauds and thanks the people who worked that storm, saying many worked more than 30 hours and did their best, but we do need more contractors. Westerling says crews are already out filling potholes and will be working on the parks to prepare for the spring and summer.
