Dr. Michael Potter of Saint Vincent Hospital Discusses Weight Loss Surgery and Long-Term Health Benefits

Worcester, MA- Dr. Michael Potter, the Chief of Bariatric Surgery at St. Vincent Hospital spoke with Hank Stolz about weight loss surgery. Dr. Potter discussed obesity as a significant disease and outlined the various treatment options, highlighting surgery as the most effective for significant weight loss and management of related health conditions. “We know that surgery will prolong life. It helps to control the diseases that come with obesity like sleep apnea, hypertension, diabetes.”  He explained the criteria for surgical candidacy, focusing on the Body Mass Index (BMI). A key topic was the use of advanced robotic surgery, which Dr. Potter described as a tool that enhances precision and visualization. He also stressed the critical importance of a multidisciplinary support system, including behavioral medicine and nutrition, for post-operative success.
