The Worcester City Council voted 11-0 to file a petition that turned out a large number of citizens who let it be known that Worcester is a welcoming city. Tom Marino of thisweekinworcester.com notes that a small group of people, who feel that they are the only ones who care about the Constitution, filed a petition that he feels is unconstitutional under the 14th Amendment. In reference to the petition Marino sys we don’t create different classes of citizens in the U.S. He says it would never survive a court challenge and can’t understand why it was allowed on the agenda. Hank pointed out that the language used in the petition, to amend the city charter, seems to have been the deciding factor in allowing this item that led to three hours of condemnation from the public and City Council. Mark Henderson of the 016.com picked up on that point. He says questions are being asked about how this ended up on the agenda and he knows at least one reporter is asking for the communications between the city and the head of the Worcester Republican City Committee who filed it. Did the city help them fashion the language needed to get it on the agenda? Was there some kind of guidance given by the law department? Other items such as the Charter/Spectrum contract negotiation have been left off in the past. Want to hear the item? Hank reads it at the top of The Rundown.
