Worcester Mayor Joe Petty Slams Developer Pullout, Addresses $800K Polar Park Shortfall and Future Options

Worcester Mayor Joe Petty reacts to and explains a shortfall of close to $800,000 to the city general fund for Polar Park. Petty says the issue is with the developer of four parcels including the building that was supposed to be built behind left field of the ball park. Petty says the developer simply sent a letter that he was pulling out of the deal. A move the Mayor called disrespectful. Petty said he understands the economy but there should have been communication with the city. He said the city is reviewing the agreement and seeing what options they have. He did mention eminent domain as not being out of the question. He said there are other developers who are looking for spaces. Madison properties pay the city the taxes on that property and by removing themselves from the project it will cost Worcester several hundred thousand dollars. Petty says the project will still pay for itself over the lifespan of the 30 years of the deal and points to The Cove and other properties coming online.
