WORCESTER, MA– Better Business Bureau of Central New England CEO Lisa Swanson and Hank Stolz welcomed Shannon Manassa, Director of Operations for the BBB, to discuss a fast-growing scam that can affect anyone using tap-to-pay technology.
Manassa warned listeners about ghost-tapping — a new tactic criminals use to exploit the convenience of tap-to-pay cards and mobile wallets. As contactless payments have become the norm, scammers are now taking advantage of the Near Field Communication (NFC) technology that allows these fast, wireless transactions.
Unlike traditional card skimming or physical theft, ghost-tapping requires no physical contact. A fraudster only needs to get close enough in a crowded environment — at a concert, festival, grocery store, or any packed public space. With the right device, they can initiate a small charge without the cardholder even realizing it’s happening.
Manassa emphasized that the scam is not limited by age, tech experience, or location. “Anyone using tap-to-pay could be a target,” she noted. The BBB recommends that consumers stay alert in crowded places, use RFID-blocking wallets or sleeves, and monitor bank statements regularly for micro-charges that may signal attempted fraud.
The BBB continues to track emerging payment scams as tap-to-pay adoption grows, reminding the public that convenience should always be paired with caution.
