Councilor Moe Bergman Proposes Withholding Pay for Habitually Absent Councilors Amidst Ongoing Nguyen Controversy

worcester city council

City Councilor Moe Bergman calls into the Talk of the Commonwealth to give us the details on his proposal to enforce attendance and provide a mechanism for withholding pay on councilor’s who have too many unexplained absences. Under item Ten (a) to be taken up at the City Council meeting the City Clerk will take attendance at each meeting (something he already does) if a councilor misses three meeting in a year without an excuse the clerk will then inform the council of that fact. Then under item Ten (b) to be taken up by the council (if Ten (a) passes) the council would vote on withholding pay for meetings missed. Bergman said everybody has to get up and go to work, the city council should be no different and that the council even provides for councilors to attend remotely. The need for the rule clearly goes to Councilor Thu Nguyen saying they won’t be attending meetings in protest and because of a hostile work environment. Nguyen has threatened to sue the city over what they see as retaliation for their actions.
