Matt Moore on Managing Communications, Transparency, and Public Trust in Worcester

WORCESTER, MASS-Matt Moore on his role and responsibilities as the Director of Communications and Marketing for the City of Worcester. Moore has been with the city since 2021, previously working in the Division of Public Health and the City Manager’s office before being appointed to his current role last year. “Our job is primarily for getting information out as transparently and accurately as we can be,” said Moore. The office has expanded to include six full-time staff members, as well as additional support from the web team and cable services, to handle the increasing volume of media inquiries, social media, and other communication needs. The communications team closely monitors social media and online discussions about the city, but must balance the need for immediate responses with ensuring the accuracy of information.
Moore breaks down how the team reacts to events in the city and criticism that can come the administration’s way, particularly on social media, and when and how they respond. One example Moore is frequently asked about is the presence of ICE agents on Eureka Street and how that issue is handled, both then and now, by the communications department.
