WORCESTER, MASS- Congressman Jim McGovern is sounding the alarm over what he calls deeply troubling and authoritarian behavior from former President Donald Trump. In a wide-ranging conversation with Hank Stolz on Talk of the Commonwealth, McGovern pointed to Trump’s recent threats—to jail journalists, deport political opponents, and even arrest former President Barack Obama—as dangerous and deliberate distractions.
“This is a very dangerous time,” McGovern said. “His threats could intimidate people into not telling the truth. They could intimidate the press from reporting the facts.”
McGovern says the barrage of controversial statements—from demanding the Washington Commanders revert to their former name, to questioning the release of the Jeffrey Epstein file—is part of an effort to shift focus away from what Trump fears might be personally damaging revelations.
“The president’s unhinged,” McGovern said. “Seriously. I hope people around him are trying to find ways to calm him down.”
He emphasized that political dissent should never be met with threats of deportation or imprisonment.
“This is the United States of America. This is not Russia. This is not China.”
McGovern closed with a warning that, regardless of political affiliation, Americans must not normalize this kind of rhetoric.
McGovern thinks Worcester exploring a city owned grocery store is worthwhile. “Again, look, one of the challenges we have in terms of food affordability is that a lot of people are forced to rely on these corner stores, which don’t have much of a selection, and sometimes the prices are much inflated. I mean, I think it’s something absolutely worth looking into.”
