WORCESTER, MA-Political analyst and author Rich Rubino looks back at President Trump’s past year in office. President Trump’s approval ratings in 2025 dropped into the mid-to-late 30s, a trend Rubino identified as typical for a second-term president who overreached their mandate. “The president comes in on all cylinders and tries to kind of overreach, if you will, kind of overinterpret the mandate. And what generally happens is that president’s job approval tends to dissipate…” The economy is the driving factor as many Americans do not “perceive” the economy as being better under Trump than it was under Joe Biden, which contributed to a sense of “buyer’s remorse” among centrist voters.

Rubino also talked about the upcoming elections in 2026. He pointed out that historical precedent strongly suggests that the president’s party loses seats in the sixth year of a presidency, positioning Democrats for potential gains in the 2026 midterm elections. “And if he does lose the House and he does lose the Senate, then there will be investigations array, I think, by the Democrats to try to take on Donald Trump as everybody looks toward the 2028 elections.”

The Epstein files have been a continuing story but unclear what the final impact will be. The release of the Epstein files caused a significant rift between Donald Trump and some of his key allies, like Marjorie Taylor Green, who voted for their release. The files implicated numerous public figures, but Rubino noted that so far, no evidence had emerged showing Trump or Bill Clinton with Jeffrey Epstein after his criminal convictions became public.

Rubino also covered Trump’s unique foreign policy approach to the Russia-Ukraine conflict. He characterized Trump’s foreign policy regarding the Russia-Ukraine conflict as distinct from that of most American politicians, noting his efforts to negotiate a peace deal while appearing sympathetic to Russia’s position.

Dr. Michael Hirsch on Worcester’s “Guns to Gardens” Program

Dr. Michael Hirsch joined Talk of the Commonwealth to discuss the 24-year evolution of Worcester’s Guns to Gardens program, a voluntary, non-confrontational gun buyback effort aimed at reducing accidental deaths, suicides, and domestic violence by removing unsecured firearms from local homes. With nearly 5,000 weapons collected since 2002, the program pairs safe disposal with a symbolic transformation: surrendered guns are forged into garden tools for community spaces, turning instruments of harm into tools of nourishment. Worcester residents can drop off firearms this Saturday from 9–1 at Police Headquarters or City Welding & Fabrication on Ararat Street.
