The King Will Be Challenged: Geoffrey Esper Looks to Unseat Joey Chestnut at Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Contest

On July 4th, the annual Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Contest will take place at Coney Island and the current champion, Joey Chestnut, is once again being challenged by Oxford resident and competitive eater Geoffrey Esper. For years now, Chestnut has been the reigning king of hot dogs and has consumed as many as 76 in 10 minutes during his time on the stage. However, Esper believes that he has what it takes to exceed 50 hot dogs eaten in a single sitting for the first time. Last year, he was able to eat 47.5 in 10 minutes to finish second behind Chestnut’s 63. Despite being an educator during his normal life with a full-time teaching job, Esper is still confident in his skills since he has even beaten Chestnut at various non-hot dog eating competitions such as pizza eating contests. While it could be an uphill battle against history and tradition for him to unseat the king, only time will tell if Essex can be crowned as champion on the Fourth of July.
