WORCESTER, MA- Tom Marino of thisweekinworcester.com is the news this week as he spoke out on his being sued for what the plaintiff, Thomas B. Duffy II, a 28-year veteran of the Worcester Police Department and the President of NEPBA Local 911, alleges is a deliberate and malicious campaign of falsehoods against him. Marino denies that he knowingly published falsehoods about Officer Thomas B. Duffy II.

Hank Stolz along with Mark Henderson of the016.com spoke with Marino regarding the defamation lawsuit filed against him and his publication by Worcester Police Officer and union president, Thomas B. Duffy II. Marino defended his reporting, stating that his claims were based on public records and sourced information. When pressed by Stolz He said he had not personally seen Duffy’s name on a “Brady list” but reported it based on multiple anonymous sources at the state and county level. Marino stated he had not retracted any stories related to the complaint and had only issued a minor correction on the opinion piece regarding a miscount of the number of investigations Duffy had been subject to. He argued that the lawsuit was a meritless attempt to silence him, force him to reveal his sources, and incur financial costs. Mark Henderson of the016.com also provided journalistic analysis of the situation, discussing the high bar for proving defamation against a public figure. Marino closed the conversation by saying  “I probably said too much today, but I am highly confident that in the end, there will be a fun victory lap to take.”

Dr. Michael Hirsch on Worcester’s “Guns to Gardens” Program

Dr. Michael Hirsch joined Talk of the Commonwealth to discuss the 24-year evolution of Worcester’s Guns to Gardens program, a voluntary, non-confrontational gun buyback effort aimed at reducing accidental deaths, suicides, and domestic violence by removing unsecured firearms from local homes. With nearly 5,000 weapons collected since 2002, the program pairs safe disposal with a symbolic transformation: surrendered guns are forged into garden tools for community spaces, turning instruments of harm into tools of nourishment. Worcester residents can drop off firearms this Saturday from 9–1 at Police Headquarters or City Welding & Fabrication on Ararat Street.
