WORCESTER, MA– On this week’s news roundup, Mark Henderson of the016.com and Tom Marino of This Week in Worcester joined Talk of the Commonwealth to break down the biggest stories shaping Worcester.

City Council’s Tax Decision: Predictable, Politically Safe — But Still a Hike

The Worcester City Council’s choice to adopt the lowest possible residential tax rate was described by both guests as politically predictable. While the decision allowed councilors to frame the move as “helping residents,” it still resulted in a tax increase for homeowners.

Henderson and Marino noted a continued philosophical divide among councilors over the city’s dual tax rate structure. Some believe Worcester needs a long-term strategy to reduce the commercial rate, making the city more competitive for businesses. Others argue that, especially now, residents deserve immediate tax relief, even if the structural issues remain unaddressed.

They added that the entire public conversation around taxes tends to fixate on the rate, rather than more meaningful questions about the city’s total budget, spending priorities, and overall fiscal management.

Local Coach Bob Chesney Makes a National Leap

One of the week’s more uplifting stories came from the sports world: former Worcester-area football coach Bob Chesney is heading to UCLA. After carving out a successful career at local colleges and steadily building his reputation, Chesney’s move to a major program was celebrated as a significant local success story.

Water Main Breaks Highlight Old Infrastructure — and DPW’s Strong Response

Multiple water main breaks across Worcester this past week drew attention to the city’s aging infrastructure — and the effect of cold weather on older pipes. Despite the disruptions, the Department of Public Works earned praise for its swift, effective response, with crews quickly repairing breaks and restoring service.
