Healey’s Nominee Wolohojian: Governor’s Council Awaits Decision

Maura Healey’s controversial nomination of her former, longtime partner, Gabrielle Wolohojian to the state’s Supreme Judicial Court must be approved by the Governor’s Council. We spoke to Central Mass Governor’s Council member Paul DePalo about Wolohojian’s recent appearance before the council. He tells us no one is really questioning her qualifications this is really more about the optics. No decision was made at last Wednesday’s meeting but indications are that Wolohojian will be approved. DePalo says the Council is no rubber stamp but he that he doesn’t feel that past relationship should disqualify someone who has the credentials for the job.

Massachusetts Governor Denies $140,800 Seawall Grant

Photo -Sam Doran State House News Service Massachusetts Governor Maura Healey coming down hard on the town of Milton. Telling them that since they are not complying with the MBTA Communities Law they will be denied a $140,800 grant for a seawall. Along with Milton, Holden has also not complied with the law. Selectmen Anthony Renzoni tells Talk of the Commonwealth don’t hold your breath waiting for Holden to comply any time soon. Renzoni says this a town decision on how to handle zoning and the building of multi-family homes .Holden is an MBTA community because it is adjacent to Worcester, which has Union Station. 177 communities fall under the act which was enacted to help with the severe shortage of housing in MA. Renzoni says the problems of Holden is what he is concerned with, not the problems of Boston. Under the law all MBTA Communities must change zoning regulations around their local transit stations to allow multifamily housing by-right.

Paul DePalo, Governor’s Council, stops by the studio to talk about the issues. The Governor’s Council looks at and approves or as DePalo points out sometimes does not approve, the Governor’s recommendation for judges or pardons. He says the value in that is that the Governor cannot use an important position such as Judge to repay a political favor. DePalo focusses a lot of his efforts on trying to make sure that young people aren’t set on a path at an early age that results in them being in and out of jail for much of their lives. He has also worked hard to get more people from outside 495 on the parole board and appointed as Judge’s. He is running for re-election and has a kickoff event Wednesday the 24th at the District Wood Fire Kitchen.

State Rep. Peter Durant Flips Seat from Democrat to Republican in Special Senate Race

Radio Worcester · Peter Durant Wins State Senate Seat

State Rep. Peter Durant wins election in the special State Senate race. The Republican was able to pull off the rare feat of flipping a seat from Democrat control. Durant tells Talk of the Commonwealth reports of the death of the Republican party in Massachusetts are greatly exaggerated. He points to two key issues that resonated with voters -his opposition to a recently passed gun control bill, which he says is out of step with sportsmen of his new district and his focus on the migrant crisis. Durant has been sounding the alarm about the strain put on the emergency system for months and has called for the repeal of the Massachusetts Right to Shelter law. He credited new leadership at the state level for the Republican party as being instrumental in his victory. Durant did very well in the many small towns in the district but also kept the vote very close to his opponent State Rep. Jon Zlotnik of Gardner in Zlotnik’s home city as well as Worcester.

Leominster Mayor Calls for Delay of Hospital Maternity Ward Closure

Radio Worcester · Leominster Mayor Mazzarella on the closing of the birth center

Leominster Mayor Dean Mazzarella emphasizes that despite the closure of the maternity ward at Leominster Hospital, babies will still be delivered within the city limits. However, this will necessitate their birth taking place in ambulances en route to Worcester. The Mayor expresses regret that better communication from UMass Memorial could have prompted community members to provide assistance. The Mayor questions the wisdom of closing the facility and recommends at least a postponement. Furthermore, he raises concerns about the lack of advertising for the hospital’s services. The Mayor deems the proposed plan for access to care after the closure insufficient and affirms that efforts to keep the ward open will persist. The scheduled closure date is currently September 23rd.
