Worcester, MA- Dr. Luis Pedraja, President of Quinsigamond Community College, joined Talk of the Commonwealth to discuss the role of leadership and education during periods of deep division and uncertainty. Drawing from history, Pedraja pointed to figures such as George Washington, Abraham Lincoln, and Martin Luther King Jr. as examples of leaders who guided the nation through turbulent times.

“We live in an age where people are revising history, silencing things, erasing many accomplishments,” Pedraja said. He argued that educators have a responsibility to bring historical context back into the conversation and to highlight the reflections and decisions that helped past leaders navigate moments of crisis.

Pedraja emphasized that one of the most critical roles of education today is teaching students how to think critically, evaluate facts independently, and engage respectfully with people who hold different perspectives. He noted that civil discourse and historical literacy are essential tools for sustaining democracy, especially during periods of political and cultural polarization.
