QCC Enrollment Surges to Highest Level Since 2011 with 14% Growth

WORCESTER, MA-QCC President Dr. Luis Pedraja is very excited for the start of the Fall semester. He tells Talk of the Commonwealth that QCC’s fall enrollment exceeds 9,000 students, making it the largest student body since 2011 with a 14% year-over-year increase. The fact that college is free to many now through MA state programs helps but Pedraja also points to a comprehensive team effort across college departments. “Hey, now it’s free. So take the opportunity, empower your dreams, and participate in some of the many opportunities we have.” He emphasized that the college’s focus extends beyond enrollment to include student retention and success, supported by robust support systems. “So this surge in enrollment is really going to help empower the future economic development of Worcester.”

The tuition free programs of the state are giving more people a chance to go to school. It removes barriers and opens doors. He talks about how his own family struggled to get loans to get him through school. Twenty-five percent of the student population at QCC is now Latino. The diversity of QCC is reflecting the diversity of Worcester. The school is celebrating National Hispanic Heritage month but they still see gaps and are adding more mentors and tackling food insecurity among students.
