Boston, MA- As Quinsigamond Community College prepares for its 61st graduation, President Dr. Luis Pedraja is urging students and the community to think differently about what the milestone represents.

“We call it commencement because it’s not an end, it’s a beginning. You’re commencing something. It really is a launchpad into the next stage of your life,” Pedraja said.

That mindset, he explained, is more critical than ever as industries evolve rapidly and artificial intelligence continues to reshape the workforce.

“Nowadays, it’s more important than ever that we think of education as the lifelong goal, to keep learning. Jobs are changing dramatically. AI is getting into industry and we’re going to need to continually adapt.”

Pedraja emphasized that this adaptability is something community college students already understand well. Many balance school with work, family responsibilities and financial pressures, developing resilience that translates directly into career success.

He also addressed broader challenges facing higher education, including shifting demographics and business models that are no longer sustainable. Some institutions have struggled to adjust, leading to closures such as Anna Maria College.

In contrast, Pedraja pointed to the community college model as one built for flexibility and access. Programs like free tuition at QCC, combined with a focus on workforce training and practical skills, position the college as a strong pathway for both traditional students and adult learners.

The message, he said, is simple but urgent: education does not stop at graduation. In today’s economy, it is only the starting point.
