Worcester, MA-Massachusetts’ annual Tax-Free Weekend takes place Saturday, August 8 and Sunday, August 9, 2026, and shoppers across the Commonwealth will have an opportunity to save the sales tax on qualifying purchases.

Lisa Swanson, CEO of the Better Business Bureau of Central New England, joined Radio Worcester to discuss how consumers can take advantage of the sales tax holiday while avoiding one of its biggest pitfalls: spending money simply because something appears to be a bargain.

Tax-Free Weekend can be particularly attractive for consumers who have already been planning larger purchases that qualify for the exemption. But Swanson says shoppers should have a plan before heading to the store or clicking “buy.”

“The best deal is the one you planned for—not the impulse purchase you regret later.”

Swanson recommends making a shopping list, setting a firm budget and researching prices before the weekend begins. Consumers should also check Massachusetts’ rules to determine which purchases qualify for the sales tax exemption.

Her bottom line is simple: “Tax-Free Weekend is a great time to buy something you’ve already been planning to purchase—not an excuse to spend more.”
