Financial Expert Ryan Kittredge Explains Social Security Claiming Strategy and Impact of the Social Security Fairness Act

“You don’t want it to be impulsive because it has massive implications. It can be upwards of tens, if not $100,000 or more difference between what you and your spouse get. So you want to get it right. It’s pretty much irrevocable.”

WORCESTER, MA- On this podcast Ryan Kittredge, president of ClearPath Financial Partners, provides a detailed overview of Social Security, focusing on the complexities of deciding when to claim benefits. Kittredge discussed the significant impact of the recent Social Security Fairness Act, which eliminated the Windfall Elimination Provision (WEP) and Government Pension Offset (GPO), greatly benefiting government workers. “Up until just about a year ago, a lot of those benefits were offset, sort of this double dipping theory, but the mechanics of it were really logistically confusing and seemed pretty unfair, really, because those folks that were paying in…a lot of that benefit was just wiped out completely.”

The decision of when to claim Social Security benefits is not one-size-fits-all and depends on a variety of personal factors.”You don’t want it to be impulsive because it has massive implications. It can be upwards of tens, if not $100,000 or more, difference between what you and your spouse get. So you want to get it right. It’s pretty much irrevocable.” He cautioned against making claiming decisions based on isolated factors, such as fear of the system’s insolvency or simply trying to maximize the monthly check. Claiming benefits before full retirement age (currently 67) while still earning income above a certain threshold (approximately $24,000 per year) can result in a significant, dollar-for-dollar reduction in benefits.
Instead, he advocated for a comprehensive approach that considers health, spousal benefits, other income sources, opportunity costs, and crucial tax implications. “So make sure you walk through all that before you pull the trigger.”
