Sherman Whitman: Celebrating Over 50 Years in Radio Broadcasting
Imagine being able to work at what you love for over 50 years. Well, Sherman Whitman, has done just that. In a broadcast career that began in the early 1970’s in Detroit and saw him hosting a morning show for the last eight years in Fitchburg, Sherman has informed and entertained generations of listeners. He has been a mentor to many young broadcasters.
Hank Stolz, who was Sherman’s partner at WTAG for a decade, on the successful “The WTAG Morning News with Hank and Sherman,” talks with his friend about his years in radio. His start in Detroit, his coming to Boston and joining the crew at WBCN, moving on to WTAG, WCRN and WPKZ. They talk about the stories that stick out in Sherman’s mind, including the Cold Storage Warehouse fire and the Jesse Burkett Little League World Series run. The behind the scenes stories and his love of local radio. Sherman’s last broadcast will be on the K-Zone 105.3 FM/1280 AM Fitchburg/Leominster at 1 p.m. on Friday June 28th. (Sherman does say he’s not done yet and is curious about podcasting and I know he has at least one offer to be a contributor from a certain local morning show.)
