Worcester’s Vision Zero: Creating Safer Streets

What is Worcester’s Vision Zero Safety Action Plan and how will it make us safer? Commissioner of Transportation and Mobility Stephen Rolle steps into the Radio Worcester studio to do the deep dive into the plan and the city’s vision for a safer community. He is joined by Chris Dempsey who is working on a plan for a more walkable Worcester. All around the world cities are looking at how to reduce accidents to the point that all fatal crashes are eliminated. Rolle said it is time to focus on the safety of our street network. The federal government is also focused on safer streets and has provided funding. Worcester is going street by street to see where more sidewalks can be added, more bike lanes, bump-outs, more visibility, and by doing those things create not only a safer city but a more vibrant city. An example of this program working is Hoboken, NJ which was experiencing higher than normal fatalities and began efforts to look at how their streets were laid out. It has now been seven years since they had a fatality. Want to learn more? You are invited to hear a presentation on a more Walkable City at the JMAC on Feb. 29th.
