WORCESTER, MA– Tim Murray, President and CEO of the Worcester Regional Chamber of Commerce and a former Mayor and Lt. Governor, discussed his decision to resign from the board of directors of the Worcester Regional Research Bureau.

Murray emphasized that his resignation was not a criticism of the bureau’s work or its executive director, Paul Matthews. Instead, he cited two key concerns. The first was the timing of the bureau’s recent report recommending the creation of a civilian police review board — a politically sensitive proposal released just three weeks before a city election. Murray argued that such timing undermines the opportunity for thoughtful, reflective public discourse and pressures both the City Manager and political candidates to respond hastily to a complex issue.

His second concern focused on the structure of the bureau’s governing body. Murray noted that the “board of directors” functions more as a group of financial supporters rather than an active decision-making body, suggesting the title “corporator” or “supporter” would be more accurate.

Despite stepping down, Murray reaffirmed that both he and the Chamber of Commerce remain strong supporters of the Research Bureau’s mission and the work it produces.

Worcester Chamber Survey: Residents Concerned About Housing, City Council Dysfunction

Tim Murray, President and CEO of the Worcester Regional Chamber of Commerce, discussed results from a new survey showing that while 50% of residents believe Worcester is headed in the right direction, that figure is down 10% from two years ago. Housing has emerged as the top concern at 22%, overtaking public safety. More than 80% of respondents said the City Council should focus on local and neighborhood issues. The survey also showed strong support for the Worcester Police and greater demand for vocational and technical education. Murray further criticized the Worcester Board of Health for denying a tobacco license to a women- and minority-owned nightclub, citing job losses and poor communication from city departments.

Chamber Supports Clean City Push and Culinary Growth Through Food Hub and Green Corps Initiatives

In a recent Talk of the Commonwealth interview, Tim Murray of the Worcester Regional Chamber of Commerce spotlights two key initiatives: the Worcester Food Hub, which provides commercial kitchen space for local food entrepreneurs, and the Worcester Green Corps, a cleanup and beautification partnership. As the city intensifies efforts to combat trash and blight, the Chamber remains at the forefront of collaboration and community improvement.
