WORCESTER, MA– Worcester’s Department of Public Works and Parks hit the ground running during the first snowstorm of the season — a storm that arrived earlier than expected and while leaf collection was still underway. DPW Commissioner John Westerling joined Talk of the Commonwealth to share how Worcester managed the challenge and what the city learned from it.

Westerling acknowledged that not all private plowing contractors were online yet due to the storm’s timing, adding extra pressure on city crews who were already working long hours managing fall cleanup. Yet, he emphasized the city’s proactive investments designed to strengthen winter readiness.

Over the past year, Worcester has:
• Added 44 new pieces of snow-fighting equipment
• Rebuilt the city’s weather stations for better forecasting data
• Upgraded the brine system to improve pre-treatment and road safety

The commissioner addressed ongoing concerns from residents about delayed leaf pickup and emphasized that Worcester’s steep hills and dense neighborhoods require a clear focus on safety first — including strict adherence to parking bans.

Some DPW employees worked nearly 40 hours straight during the storm to keep roads passable. Westerling praised their dedication and said the experience served as a valuable early test that will help the city refine operations for future winter events.

“Our crews take enormous pride in what they do,” Westerling said. “This first storm gives us a great opportunity to learn, adjust, and be even better prepared.”

As Worcester enters deeper winter, the DPW is asking the community for patience, caution, and cooperation — especially when it comes to parking rules and keeping roadways clear for emergency access.
