WORCESTER, MA-City Councilor Moe Bergman joined Hank Stolz on Talk of the Commonwealth to discuss the recent Worcester City Council recount a process that ultimately confirmed his re-election. Hank opened by noting Bergman’s now-familiar message of “No Chaos,” a theme that appeared to strike a chord with voters. Bergman acknowledged that the closeness of the race for seats 5 through 8 was notable, but he said he felt confident that his campaign message resonated strongly.
Bergman described the recount as revealing widespread variation in voter behavior. Instead of adhering to a predictable political pattern, he said voters seemed to choose candidates based largely on personal interactions. “Voting patterns were all over the map,” Bergman observed, adding that the strong and diverse field of candidates made the election particularly competitive.
Looking ahead, Bergman characterized the incoming City Council as more moderate, older in demographic makeup, and more male-dominated than in recent cycles. He predicted a shift toward pragmatism and local priorities. “I think it’s going to be a city council that definitely leans away from the progressive philosophy and more toward a moderate philosophy,” he said. “It’s a little bit older, but I think with age comes wisdom and experience.”
Bergman also offered high praise for the Worcester City Clerk’s office and everyone involved in administering the recount. He called the process “a lesson in civics,” noting the professionalism, transparency, and precision on display. “In some ways I wish it could have been videotaped,” he said, “because I think a lot of people were left with the certainty that the election process, at least in Worcester, is done with fairness and with a sense of seriousness.”
Addressing the increases in vote totals for several candidates in the hand recount, Bergman emphasized that the changes reflected the nuances of ballot-marking such as lightly filled ovals rather than any errors or wrongdoing. The recount, he said, reinforced the reliability of the city’s electoral process while offering a clear reminder of how every vote truly counts.
