BBB Shares Essential Tips for Hiring a Home Remodeling Contractor
Planning a Renovation? BBB Shares Contractor Hiring Advice
“A successful remodeling project starts long before construction begins and it starts with choosing the right contractor.”
By-Hank Stolz
Worcester, MA- As part of National Home Remodeling Month, Lisa Swanson of the Better Business Bureau of Central New England joined Radio Worcester to discuss how homeowners can better prepare for renovation projects and avoid costly mistakes.
Swanson explained that many homeowners are choosing to renovate their existing homes instead of moving, making contractor selection more important than ever. She encouraged homeowners to establish realistic budgets and timelines before work begins and stressed the importance of doing extensive research before signing any agreement.
Swanson advised homeowners to verify contractor credentials, compare multiple estimates, and insist on detailed written contracts outlining the scope of work, costs, timelines, and payment schedules.
She also warned listeners about common contractor scams and major red flags, including high-pressure sales tactics, vague contracts, demands for large upfront payments, and unusually low bids that may lead to poor workmanship or surprise charges later in the project.
Homeowners were encouraged to use the Better Business Bureau’s online tools to review accreditation status, customer reviews, and complaint histories before hiring a contractor.
