Financial Literacy Month: BBB’s Lisa Swanson Shares Smart Consumer Tips for Central Massachusetts

“A smart purchase starts with research.”

By-Hank Stolz

Worcester, MA- April is Financial Literacy Month! Lisa Swanson, CEO of the BBB of Central New England, tells us that financial literacy is important to the BBB all year round, but this month is a concerted effort to raise awareness of its importance. Lisa tells us what being a financially smart consumer looks like day-to-day;

  • Compare prices and research before making large purchases.
  • Read contracts and understand financing terms before signing anything.
  • Avoid impulse purchases driven by pressure or limited-time offers.
  • Use secure payment methods like credit cards, which offer fraud protections.
  • “A smart purchase starts with research.”  — and that’s where BBB.org can come in handy!
Lisa also tells us about her involvement with the BBB’s Fighting Financial Fraud program. Lisa told us she is actively being trained right now to provide workshops in the Central New England area on Outsmarting Investment Fraud, Spot the Con, and The Red Flags of Fraud. These workshops are a hands-on, interactive way to learn more about financial fraud, how to spot scams and potential scammers, and how to ask questions and verify if an investment professional is registered.
