WORCESTER, MA-Yaffa Fain, the deputy cultural development officer for Worcester, discusses the upcoming “Game on Worcester” World Cup watch parties on the Worcester Common.

She details the four planned events, including the kickoff double-header, on Saturday June 13th, and highlighted the expected large-scale attendance, community partnerships, and significant economic impact for the city. “Our anticipated estimate will be likely hundreds to thousands of people and we are excited to welcome all folks. So, we’re very, very excited to be on the common and I think it will be a very large-scale event.” Fain said, “We recognize the economic impact and also community-wide impact that these kinds of large-scale programs and events offer. And these are occasions when you’ll see surges and restaurant and bar and other spending in the community and that’s so vital to our economic vitality downtown and even in neighboring districts.”

Fain also covered logistical details such as on-site amenities like a beer garden and food trucks, security measures, the large screen size, accessibility features, and the need for attendees to pre-register. She concluded by explaining the strategic selection of the games and the challenges overcome in securing the FIFA license for the events. “So, we imagine folks will be jumping from the common to the canal district through Maine South all the way home and beyond. So, it’s really a very cool tourist and economic driving opportunity.”

Key partners include Discover Central Massachusetts, the Massachusetts Organization of African Descendants (MOAD), and MA Youth Soccer.

WORCESTER, MA-The 29th annual Arthritis Charity Ball will be held on December 20th at The Manor restaurant, continuing a nearly three-decade tradition of raising funds for arthritis research and support programs.

This year’s event will honor Congressman James McGovern for his long-standing public service and advocacy. Clarence Plant of Odd Fellows, who founded the event more than 30 years ago, spoke with Talk of the Commonwealth about the origins of the Charity Ball and its enduring mission of giving back.

Plant said the event began as a way to support a cause that impacts far more people than many realize. “One in five Americans lives with arthritis, including more than 300,000 children,” he noted, emphasizing that arthritis is not just a disease of the elderly, as is often assumed.

Over its nearly 30-year history, the Arthritis Charity Ball has raised millions of dollars for the Arthritis Foundation, helping fund research, education, and programs that improve quality of life for those affected by the disease.

The annual gathering has become a cornerstone charitable event in the region, combining advocacy, awareness, and community support in the fight against arthritis.

Planting the Seed Foundation Toy Drive celebrates 53rd year!

WORCESTER, MA– Molly McCullough from the Planting the Seed Foundation joined Talk of the Commonwealth to share the remarkable story behind one of Worcester’s most beloved holiday traditions. What started as a simple conversation at a house party 53 years ago has grown into a major charitable effort that supports thousands of Worcester-area children every holiday season.

At the heart of their mission is the Annual Holiday Toy Drive — providing gifts to kids from newborns through age 18. McCullough emphasized that while toys for little ones are usually abundant, there is a significant need for donations geared toward teenagers. Items like basketballs, hygiene kits, beauty products, and gift cards can make a huge difference for older kids who are sometimes forgotten.

The event also includes a hugely popular holiday party. Each year, a massive pile of donated toys grows in the center of the room as hundreds of generous community members arrive.

“It is truly heartwarming… no matter how many years I’ve been going or I’ve seen that pile, it just hits you that people are so generous and there is such a great need.” — Molly McCullough

WORCESTER, MA-This weekend, Clark University will host the inaugural Games for Good Conference, a two-day academic event dedicated to the expanding world of serious games—video games intentionally designed for education, therapy, and social change.

Paul Cotnoir, Dean of the Becker School of Design & Technology at Clark, joined Talk of the Commonwealth to preview the conference and discuss how Clark’s program is helping lead the field.

Cotnoir explained that serious games are quickly becoming powerful tools in mental health, especially when used as adjuncts to traditional therapy. For children on the autism spectrum, for example, game-based environments can provide structure, repetition, and engagement in ways traditional methods cannot always match.

He emphasized that the sheer scale of the global gaming audience—now more than 3 billion people, most of them adults—makes the medium uniquely influential. “When you have that many people interacting with games,” Cotnoir noted, “you have a tremendous opportunity to do good.”

The Games for Good Conference will take place Saturday, Nov. 22, and Sunday, Nov. 23, at Clark’s Center for Media Arts, Computing & Design, located at 7 Hawthorne Street in Worcester. The event will bring together researchers, developers, educators, and students who are exploring how game design can address real-world challenges.

As Cotnoir put it, this first-ever gathering is “a chance to show how meaningful, intentional game design can improve lives and strengthen communities.”

WORCESTER, MA– This Wednesday at 7 p.m., the Palladium in Worcester will host a special community screening of Shattered Ice, a powerful drama that follows a young hockey player grappling with the loss of his best friend to suicide.

The film, written by Jake Miskin and inspired by true events from his small Massachusetts hometown, aims to spark honest conversations about mental health, grief, and emotional resilience among athletes and young people.

Joining Talk of the Commonwealth to discuss the film’s message were Reliant Foundation President Kelsa Zereski and Miskin, who shared their hope that this event will help reduce the stigma surrounding mental illness and suicide — especially in communities where strength and toughness are often emphasized over vulnerability.

The Reliant Foundation is helping to promote and make possible this community screening as part of its mission to support programs that address mental health and substance misuse across Central Massachusetts.

As Zereski noted, “We want to normalize these conversations — to make it okay for people, especially young athletes, to talk about what they’re going through.”

More information about the film and event can be found at reliantfoundation.org/shattered-ice
