WORCESTER, MA– Congressman Jim McGovern has grave concerns over what he described as the militarization of the capital, viewing the National Guard’s presence as political “theater” and a step towards a police state rather than a genuine solution to crime. “I worry that what makes this country special and unique, our democracy, our freedoms, our separation of powers is being eroded daily by this president. And it is really quite frightening.”

McGovern feels that the President is eroding American democracy and freedom, citing the creation of a new, National Guard, rapid response team under direct presidential control and the display of the President’s image on government buildings as evidence of a move toward authoritarianism. “What would we think if this were another country? And the reality is we would think that it’s a police state.”

McGovern also confirmed his intention to reintroduce an amendment to force the release of the Epstein files, emphasizing the need for transparency.

Rep. Jim McGovern Says Shutdown Fight Centers on Healthcare and ACA Tax Credits

Congressman Jim McGovern told Talk of the Commonwealth that Democrats are in Washington ready to work, while Republicans remain absent. He framed the shutdown as a necessary fight over healthcare, specifically the renewal of Affordable Care Act tax credits to prevent skyrocketing costs. McGovern called the Republican-led Congress “dysfunctional” for refusing open debate and warned that administration threats to permanently lay off federal workers are “illegal and retribution.”
