WORCESTER, MA– Congressman Jim McGovern tells us the Democrats are in Washington, ready to work, and the Republicans are nowhere to be seen. On the Talk of the Commonwealth McGovern framed the shutdown as a necessary fight over healthcare, specifically the need to renew Affordable Care Act tax credits to prevent citizens’ healthcare costs from skyrocketing. When asked if the Government shutdown is necessary when the fight is about extending the ACA he argued the Republican-led Congress was dysfunctional, as it did not allow for amendments or open debate on legislation, forcing a “take it or leave it” approach. “This is about healthcare, and I don’t think it’s too much to ask to address that issue because it’s an issue that’s happening right now. It’s not something that can be put off.” He said the administration’s threats to permanently lay off federal workers is illegal and an act of retribution. “The role of this White House should be to help improve the quality of life for the people of this country… and unfortunately, that’s not what’s happening right now in Washington.”

McGovern Warns of Capital Militarization, Vows to Reintroduce Epstein Files Amendment

Congressman Jim McGovern expressed grave concerns about what he described as the militarization of the capital, calling the National Guard’s presence political “theater” and a step toward a police state. He warned that democracy and freedoms are being eroded daily, citing the creation of a National Guard rapid response team under direct presidential control and the display of the President’s image on government buildings. McGovern stressed that such actions resemble authoritarianism, asking, “What would we think if this were another country?” He also confirmed his intention to reintroduce an amendment to force the release of the Epstein files, underscoring the need for transparency.
