WORCESTER, MA– Michael Welch, CEO of UniBank, joined Talk of the Commonwealth to share an update on the bank’s ongoing partnership with Habitat for Humanity. Welch explained how the collaboration recently helped two local lower-income families achieve homeownership through a program that blends sweat equity, a lottery system, and mortgages provided by UniBank.

The initiative serves families earning between 30% and 60% of the area’s median income—households that often fall through the cracks of traditional lending and housing assistance. Welch emphasized the dual benefits of the program: transforming lives by helping families secure their first homes while revitalizing neighborhoods and strengthening community ties.

Reflecting on the emotional impact of homeownership, Welch said, “I can’t wait to hear the stories from the two families we’ve helped so far about what their first Thanksgiving and Christmas will look like and be like for the first time ever in their lives, in their own home.”

He also hinted at another upcoming initiative with Habitat for Humanity to be announced in late December or early January, reinforcing UniBank’s long-term commitment to community investment and housing accessibility.

Worcester Chamber Survey: Residents Concerned About Housing, City Council Dysfunction

Tim Murray, President and CEO of the Worcester Regional Chamber of Commerce, discussed results from a new survey showing that while 50% of residents believe Worcester is headed in the right direction, that figure is down 10% from two years ago. Housing has emerged as the top concern at 22%, overtaking public safety. More than 80% of respondents said the City Council should focus on local and neighborhood issues. The survey also showed strong support for the Worcester Police and greater demand for vocational and technical education. Murray further criticized the Worcester Board of Health for denying a tobacco license to a women- and minority-owned nightclub, citing job losses and poor communication from city departments.

Chamber Supports Clean City Push and Culinary Growth Through Food Hub and Green Corps Initiatives

In a recent Talk of the Commonwealth interview, Tim Murray of the Worcester Regional Chamber of Commerce spotlights two key initiatives: the Worcester Food Hub, which provides commercial kitchen space for local food entrepreneurs, and the Worcester Green Corps, a cleanup and beautification partnership. As the city intensifies efforts to combat trash and blight, the Chamber remains at the forefront of collaboration and community improvement.
