WORCESTER, MASS.- Worcester Public Library Executive Director Jason Homer told Talk of the Commonwealth that while the library’s core mission of providing books remains central — circulating over one million titles each year — the role of a modern, urban library extends far beyond shelves and pages.

Homer described the library as a place for “messy information needs,” questions and challenges that can’t be solved by a quick Google search or replaced by AI. It’s also one of the last truly free public spaces, serving as a cooling center in summer, a warming center in winter, and a judgment-free place where everyone is welcome — from families attending programs to unhoused individuals seeking shelter.

The Worcester Public Library employs a social worker whose role is to connect patrons with the right social services, not manage caseloads. Safety is addressed through a proactive approach. Homer says the library’s security guard focuses on de-escalation and personal connection, often resolving issues before they arise. “A simple conversation that says, ‘How can I help you?’ can turn a bad day into the start of a better path,” he explained, noting that they’ve seen unhoused patrons become integrated members of the community.

The Worcester Public Library has earned international recognition for its efforts, including a first-place International Marketing Award from the International Federation of Library Associations — beating cities like Beijing — and the prestigious John Cotton Dana Award from the American Library Association.
