WORCESTER, MASS.-State Senator Michael Moore joined Talk of the Commonwealth to address several key legislative priorities, including his bill to ban PFAS chemicals from artificial turf fields in Massachusetts.

The proposed legislation would prohibit the use of public funds for any new artificial turf fields containing PFAS—chemicals linked to cancer—and require that, when an existing field reaches the end of its life cycle, it be replaced with a PFAS-free alternative. Moore noted that while he believes the health risks warrant immediate removal, the bill is structured to address cost concerns from municipalities.

“If I was being extreme on this, which I think the fact that we potentially have kids playing on a field that has a carcinogen, we should demand it get ripped up right away. But having said that, knowing some people will prioritize money, the costs over the public health, I’m just saying that upon the lifecycle end of that field, it should be replaced,” Moore said.

The senator became involved in PFAS legislation after learning of its carcinogenic presence in firefighter turnout gear.

Moore also explained his support for a statewide cell phone ban in schools, saying it will ensure consistency across districts and equal educational access for all students. The move is intended to eliminate disparities created by varying local policies.

Other topics included strengthening the SHIELD Act and securing Chapter 90 funding for roads and bridges in the listening area.
